Personal Fall Protection

Inspecting of personal fall protection equipment and rope access equipment is essential. So who can inspect rope access and fall protection equipment? Is an IRATA level 3 qualified to do this? 
 
Only a competent person or someone with the necessary ability, knowledge, skill and training can safely inspect fall protectionand rope access equipment. Look at some of the failed items below and see if you could have identified the failures with these items of rope access equipment.
 
 
 
 
The above three photographs show a fall arrest twin tail lanyard that had a small split in the protective plastic wrapped around the shock absorber at the base of the lanyard. Swarf had fallen into the shock absorbing pack of the lanyard, this was embedded in the webbing of the lanyard and not visible until the whole of the protective sleeve was removed. The swarf had started to cut into the fibres of the lanyard. 
 
 
Broken tooth on the wheel of a Petzl ASAP fall arrest safety back-up. This is an instant fail.
 
 
Broken stitching on the sternal attachment point of a fall arrest harness. Instant fail.
